The first edition of this book (OUP UK, 1992) was written after the final encounter of the Voyager mission in 1989, when Voyager-2 imaged Neptune and Triton. This marked the end of reconnaissance studies of the outer Solar System except for Pluto. Since 1989 the Galileo mission has added a wealth of new and more detailed images of Jupiter's four satellites, and new insight into their internal structure. In this edition, Dr. Rothery will present a 'post-Galileo view'
of these satellites, as well as new images of the other planetary satellites and Pluto from the Hubble Space Telescope. Notably, the satellite images include Saturn's Titan, imaged through the clouds for the first time, for Pluto, images of surface brightness patterns were obtained. As in the first
edition, this book will include an 8-page full-colour insert.
