1940. Orphan Flossy Brown arrives at Trout's garment factory in London's Bethnal Green during the uncertainty of the Second World War. Soon Flossy is embraced by a colourful mix of characters, who fast become the family she's always longed for. Dolly Doolaney gives Flossy a particularly warm welcome, and helps her settle in to factory life. However, things aren't so easy for Peggy Piper: she spends her days bent double over a sewing machine - a far cry from the glamour of her former life in the West End. Dolly sets up a sewing circle so that the ladies of Trout's can play their part in defending the Home Front. Armed with their needles, each of them set about stitching their way to victory. But when the full force of the Blitz rains down on London, the women of the sewing bee are forced to bear unimaginable terrors. Amid the horror of wartime life, will Dolly reveal the secret she's held for so long? And how will Peggy and Flossy cope as their lives are shaped by forces outside their control?
