Much of his boyhood was spent in England, he was formally educated at United Services College, Westward Ho, North Devon. From 1882 to 1889 he was a journalist in India, being assistant editor of the Civil and Military Gazette and the Pioneer. In the tropics he matured swiftly, publishing his first book, "Departmental Ditties, " at the age of twenty. In 1907 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. He has enjoyed a planet-wide reputation for more than thirty years, and it is a matter for public rejoicing that he is no older than fifty-five. He is a novelist of distinction, the foremost living English poet, and a universally acknowledged master of the art of writing short stories. He was formally educated in Devonshire.
