Excerpt from SermonsWhen college life was over, he hastened to the field, and in the service of the Sani tary Commission did most devoted and use ful service to the soldiers for a year. In 1864 he entered himself as a student of the Episcopal Divinity School in Philadelphia. There he remained two years, spending a long vacation at the close Of the first year in teaching a Freedman's school in Farm ville, Virginia. He was ordained a Deacon in the Protestant Episcopal Church, at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Philadelphia, by Bishop Stevens, on the 12th Of June, 1866. At once the West attracted him, and he he came Rector of St. Paul's Church, Des Moines, Iowa.
