Barbary pirates capture Rachel and her father, Moses Levy, on a merchant ship headed for America 200 years ago. Rachel and Moses are sold into slavery in Morocco and seek to escape despite the daunting barriers they face. Their journey will affect present-day Sara Miller's search for her grandmother's brother, lost in the Holocaust. Sara travels from Florida to Gibraltar and, along the way, discovers her family's hidden past as well as her own connection to Rachel and to Florida's history.
