Excerpt from Shemus Dhu, the Black Pedlar of Galway: A Tale of the Penal Times
Matter was settled, and found that their lands and money were lost by the expenses of the law-suit. Then they agreed to build, with all their resources, two castles on the only lot of ground remaining to them, in which they would be shut in from the world which they detested, and from each other, with one condition of mutual service - that every morning and evening they should appear at opposite windows and scold and grin at each other to their hearts content. Hence the name of the Castles of the two Hags.
