Excerpt from Shropshire Parish Registers, Vol. 7: Diocese of Lichfield Montford is a parish on the banks of the Severn, 5 miles from Shrewsbury, in the Archdeaconry of Salop, Diocese of Lichfield, and Hundred of Pimhill, the population of which was 478 in 1891 and 436 in 1901. It consists of the townships of Ensdon, Forton, and Montford, With a united area of acres. The fitz-alans, Earls of Arundel, were early owners, and from them it passed by purchase to Sir Thomas Bromley, Lord Chancellor of England, 1579 - 85. When his descendant, Henry Bromley, was raised to the Peerage, in 1741, he took his title of Lord Montfort from this parish, and by word of mouth ordered the Vicar to alter the name of the Parish in this Register according to his Title. The second Lord Montfort parted with this property to the great Lord Clive about 1760, and it now remains in the hands of the Earl of Powis, who is the present Lord of the Manor. The existing Church, dedicated to St. Chad, was built in 1736, and is a small plain edifice of red sandstone. It was restored in 1884 at a cost of £700, when the north porch and the organ u ere added, and open seats introduced in place of the old square pews. In 1891 a peal of six bells was placed in the tower, the three old ones being sold towards defraying the cost. These three old bells bore the inscrip.
