In 1937, there was the conformity of nice people, the conformity of the Communists and their rings of fellow travelers and sympathizers, and the conformity Of the cash register, sometimes all three blended into one hosannah for the plays Of Clifford Odets, say, or the Federal Thea tre's Living Newspaper. One of my friends, I remember, sat behind J. P. Morgan at a performance Of The Cradle Will Rock, an hysterical lampoon on capitalism, and watched him rub his white head in mild perturbation. We on Partisan Review were the only ones, as I recall, who were attacking right and left from an independent posi tion.
