Excerpt from Sir Charles Bagot: An Incident in Canadian Parliamentary HistoryIn the very charming correspondence which forms the main part of Colonel Ragot's two volumes, Charles Bagot stands out as an bld-fashioned, worldly, cultured, delightful, and unbusinesslike diplomatist, worthy perhaps of a prominent and kindly portraiture by Thackeray, for he dwelt in Vanity Fair, and possessed most of its pleasing ways. Apart from his friendships, his letters, and the actual results of his American embassy, he might have passed through life, deserving nothing more than some few references in the memoirs of the Regency and the early Victorian era. But an ironic fate took this ami able and minor figure, placed him in an actual situation, and, since fate found him ironically equal to herself, established him as one of the foremost figures in the development of Canadian Parliamentary life. And so we come to Canada.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
