Excerpt from Sketches of the Early Settlement and Present Advantages of Princeton, Illinois, Including Valuable Statistics, Etc: Also, a Brief Sketch of Bureau County, and a Business Directory
The first settlement in what is now called the Township of Princeton was made in the spring of 1829, by Mr. Elijah Epperson, from Ohio.
Several families were at this' time residing in the vicin ity, being scattered along the line of timber bordering on the Bureau creek, but few persons, however, were then residents of the county.
Few individuals have even a faint conception of the picturesque appearance of the country, or the hardships endured by the early settlers of our town. The country then being in a state of nature, presented beauty in its wide spread plains, stretching as far as the eye could reach, covered with ¿owers of nearly every shade and color, and tall grass. Indeed they were beautiful when in their full bloom, and would excite admiration in every lover of wild scenery.
