With the advancement of technology urban city dynamics are changing rapidly. Cities are becoming smart faster with different initiatives taken by the government along with private organizations. These technical upgradations are changing the life of the citizens at a fast pace. The needs of the citizens are the primary driving forces behind the city's and society's overall technological growth. In this context, identifying the segments that can be enhanced is critical from a re- searcher's perspective. This thesis focuses on the societal application sector among the various segments available. Even in one segment, there are numerous domains, each with its own set of problems. Since, this thesis is focuses on the welfare of the citizens, it chooses a domain based on the interest of the citizen that is smart healthy living. Environmental pollution and smart living are the two societal problems that are considered in this thesis in order to provide a wise healthy life to the citizen. Now, within the environment pollution, two sub-domains are focused, i.e., air and noise pollution. On the other hand, in the sub-domain smart living, comfort and convenience of living are considered. In this regard, a building where the person stays, plays an important role. Thus, three selected sub-domains are air pollution, noise pollution and smart building. Here, while solving different practical problems in the above-mentioned sub-domains, modern technological advancements e.g., IoT, Cloud, Fog and smart handhelds are utilized. While solving the issues, different technical and research related difficulties are encountered that are addressed here as contributions of the thesis.
As citizens are exposed to air and noise pollutions in both indoor and outdoor environments due to their day-to-day activities, measuring their individual as well as the overall city's pollution exposure is necessary but not being done currently. The first sub-domain considered here is air quality. It is identified that there is a shortage of air quality monitoring stations for the cities in third world countries like India. But without monitoring the air quality, it's the effect on human health can not be measured. So, for more granular monitoring of air quality and to understand individual's air pollution exposure, AirSense system is proposed which is an oppor- tunistic crowdsensing based air quality monitoring system, aimed at collecting and aggregating sensor data to monitor air pollution in the vicinity and in the city.
