This circumstance will account for some peculiarities of style and treatment which would scarcely have characterized it had it been begun and completed as a book. It may possibly strike some as strange that I have devoted so much space in the last two chapters to the presentation of results arrived at by some of the critics, and so little to criticism of the results.
