Excerpt from Some Historical Errors of James Ford Rhodes Those who will do me the honor of reading these chapters, and have read, or may hereafter read, the "Facts of Reconstruction, " will not fail to see the fact brought out that, shortly after the Democratic victories in the state and Congressional elections of 1874, a propaganda was put on foot to deceive and mislead the public with reference to the political situation at the South, with a view to shaping and educating public opinion so as to bring about acquiescence in, and endorsement of, illegal and questionable election methods in that section. The public was to be taught to believe that such methods were necessary to prevent "Negro domination." The true purpose was not in the interest of "white supremacy, " but in the perpetuation of the local oligarchies which had been brought into existence through the adoption and enforcement of methods which Mr. Rhodes is pleased to term "regrettable." But the real facts are to be carefully concealed and never publicly revealed.
