Excerpt from Sore Throat: Its Nature, Varieties, and Treatment, Including the Use of the Laryngoscope as an Aid to Diagnosis In issuing this illustrated edition only such changes have been made in the work as have been rendered necessary by lapse of time. It was not originally intended as a manual of the laryngoscope, it was in fact, written before the introduction of that instrument into England - before Czermak's memoir had been translated. Foreseeing the attempt to unduly elevate instrumental diagnosis, an effort was made to specify the cases in which it would be serviceable. In deference to those who have expressed a wish for further details of laryngoscopy, the plates are now added. Should the book at this date seem a protest against a style of practice of specialism which must degrade the profession in the eyes of every well-informed man, I am satisfied for it thus to be regarded. To Dr. Thomas James Walker I am indebted for the woodcuts from his pamphlet, to which work I refer any reader desirous of more explicit rules for the use of the laryngoscope.
