Excerpt from Special Reports on the Systems of Education in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland, 1901Although during these years a generous interest in education had been increasing fast, the census of 1861 showed that out of a population of some over the age of five years there were who could not read. It was estimated that in 1863, while some were enrolled as attending school for some portion of the year, there were more who were receiving no educational training whatever according to some estimates.The two tables following Show the growth of educational effort for a series Of years before and after this event. It should be Observed that the numbers of teachers and pupils in the first table are inflated as compared with those of the second which gives the mean of the respective numbers for each half of the year, while the former gives the total numbers of different teachers and pupils for an and ever portion of each year.
