It is largely drawn, as Mr. Allies himself says in the original preface, from Father Passaglia's learned work on the Prerogatives of St. Peter. That work is now very scarce, and is written in Latin. Mr. Allies has not simply translated it, which would have been of comparatively little use for the general public, but he has freely utilized its arguments and adapted it to the needs of the ordinary English reader. The subject is of the highest importance at the present moment. Nothing is more likely to tend to that re-union for which our present Holy Father has urged us to redouble our prayers, than a clear exposition of the Scriptural grounds on which the supremacy of the Pope rests. Amongst the large number of re views of a recent work lby the writer of this introduction, quite a considerable proportion made the remark that the historical argument must be taken a step further and based on Holy Scripture.
