Excerpt from Studies in Some Famous LettersI will only add that, in venturing to publish a volume of this sort, I have had one principal consideration in my mind. It is that, as it seems to me, Letters, whether regarded simply as a form of Literature, or as affording not the least sure material for the study of character, have not, at the present time, as many readers as they may fairly claim to deserve. I hope I have not neglected their purely literary importance, but my more immediate object has certainly been to piece together, as far as may be, the scattered fragments of self-portraiture, which are to be found in every collection of Letters.
