Sulfidic Sediments and Sedimentary Rocks

Angebote / Angebote:

This book provides an up-to-date, integrated review of the geochemistry and biogeochemistry of sulfur in sediments and sedimentary rocks. The (geo)chemistry of sulfur, iron and iron sulfides in sedimentary systems is reviewed. Sulfur microbiology and the microbial ecology of sulfidic sediments are discussed. Sulfur and iron stable isotope biochemistry are addressed against the background of recent advances with respect to sedimentary and microbial systems. Environmental aspects of the present sedimentary sulfur cycle are considered with reference to the development of euxinia and global anoxic events. The biogeochemistry of ancient sulfur-rich sediments and the evolution of the sedimentary sulfur system are discussed against the background of the evolution of the Earth surface environment. The evolution of the sulfur biome and its impact of the early development of life on Earth are discussed. The subject of this book is of interest to scientists in a number of disciplines, including geology, microbiology, chemistry and environmental science. The sulfur system is important to environmental scientists considering the present and future effects of pollution and anoxia. The insight that the sedimentary sulfur system provides as to the nature and evolution of the Early Earth is a major focus of current earth science research. Shales are the most abundant and widespread sedimentary rocks, and they characteristically contain significant concentrations of iron sulfides. The development of the sulfur system - particularly the characteristics of ocean anoxia over the last 200 Ma - is used to inform about the future fate of the Earth surface system as well as to understand the past. The biochemistry and microbiology of the sulfur system are key to understanding microbial ecology and the evolution of life on Earth.
