Excerpt from Supplement to Commerce Reports, Vol. 66: August 22, 1917 Since the beginning of 1916 many merchants in this consular district have appointed representatives at the principal Atlantic sea ports to look after their interests in the United States. Members Of the leading commercial houses of Johannesburg visited that coun try in order to arrange permanent buying agencies and to facilitate the shipment of goods. A representative was sent there by the Transvaal Chamber of Mines on behalf of certain members Of the Central Buying Committee to expedite consignments of mining ma chinery and materials to this district. If the American firm is not represented in this market and the South African importer has no agent in the United States, the most common method of Obtaining goods is by placing the order through a commission house, to which the local merchant pays a percentage Of the value of the purchase.
