Excerpt from Surveying, 1920The aim of the author in writing this book on Surveying has been to present the subject in such a form as will be useful to students of Civil Engineering at Universities and Technical Colleges to students who are studying for such examinations as the external examinations of the University of London, and those held by the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Surveyors' Institution, etc., and to Civil Engineers and Surveyors who are already in practice. The author has had considerable experience both in the practice and in the teaching of Surveying, and the book is an amplification of his lecture notes. The calculus has been used where necessary throughout the work - particularly in the investigation of errors - a side of the subject which is of considerable importance, and which the author has endeavoured to keep before the reader's mind throughout. It is hoped, however, that those Surveyors and Surveying Students who have not studied calculus methods will also find in the book a very considerable amount of information that will be useful to them.It should be unnecessary to point out that a thorough knowledge of Surveying cannot be obtained from a text-book alone, since it is essential that the student should do a considerable amount of practical work. It is only by the actual handling of the various instruments that an efficient working knowledge of the subject can be obtained. The reader is advised to work through the various examples given at the end of each chapter, as in many cases these have been chosen to emphasise points not elaborated in the text.By the kind permission of the authorities concerned, many of these examples are taken from the examination papers of the University of London (u. Of the University of Birmingham (u. Of and the Institution of Civil Engineers others are original.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
