Surviving in the System
Angebote / Angebote:
Using a case-study, ethnographic approach, theresearch provides portrayals of four highly motivatedEnglish learners who have managed to learn thelanguage while they struggle to survive withinTaiwan's highly competitive education system. InTaiwan, English language learning is subsumed under aChinese Imperative (Chen, Warden and Chang, 2005), bywhich the masses of students grind through a testinggauntlet that leaves many students "numb" andexhausted. Unlike average students, thepurposively-sampled participants, including twoundergraduates and two graduates, show fortitude andflexibility as they succeed in conquering theenormous tasks of learning English. This studysuggests that motivation studies, which tend to placean emphasis on the western-based dichotomy ofinternal and external motivations, result in anover-simplified model of motivation. These casestudies reveal a complex array of motivations formastering English.
