Suppose an intelligent reader of poetry to have no memory save for general characteristics, let him have explored the English poets with some thoroughness, and have forgotten the detail of his experience. It is conceivable that if he were then shown lyrics by Tennyson and Keats, odes by Shelley and Wordsworth, songs by Shakespeare and Jonson and Herrick, even allowing these to be representative examples, he might find himself in some confusion.
