Excerpt from Sycosis: Prize Essay for 1877 of the Bellevue Hospital Medical College Alumni AssociationFrom this description of the nature and the results of the disease, it is clear that the mentagra of Plinius was a very different disease from our sycosis, and that it was probably of a venereal nature. It is further evident that some forms of syphilis were frequently included in the description of sycosis by those ancient writers, since they speak of the latter as appearing on the anus (nascitur in and from the considerable resemblance of some condylomata to the pulp of a fig, it is probable that the disease referred to by them as occurring in that locality was syphilis, and probably a broad condyloma.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
