Excerpt from Synopsis of the Contents of the British Museum, Department of Coins and Medals: A Guide to the English Medals Exhibited in the King's LibraryThe medals described in this Guide have been selected for their historical interest from the larger series in the Medal Room, and are exhibited in the King's Library in the Cases marked G. H. I. K. The specimens in gold are there represented by electrotypes, and those in lead by plaster casts, coloured so as to resemble the originals. In the Cases each medal is separately labelled and numbered, the numbers referring to the descriptions in the Guide. The Introduction gives as much information as could be admitted in the limits, and each medal is described and explained on the same principle. The metal is also stated, and the size in inch es and tenths, with other particulars necessary for identification. The larger edition of this work is illustrated by seven plates, executed by the Autotype Process from casts in plaster, and it is proposed as soon as the first edition is exhausted to issue a second with a new set of plates, and so forth until the whole exhibition has been illustrated. In preparing this Guide great aid has been afforded by the unpublished Catalogue of English Medals by Mr. Ed ward Hawkins.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
