From Chicago to Kanesville (council Bluffs, Iowa), he followed well known roads. West of the Missouri, however, he took the Mormon Trail, instead of the Oregon Trail which followed the south bank of the Platte. As early as 1842 Fremont had found a well-beaten track along the north bank of the Platte. The Mormons had beaten it down still harder, in and after 1847, but few of the go'ld-seekers had gone this way.
