The edition then published was very speedily sold, but I thought it better not to send out another at once. I was painfully aware of manifold deficiencies in the work, and I hoped that, by keeping it back for a little, 1 might be able to supply some of them, and so to make it - not materially less unworthy, indeed, of its great subject, but - somewhat better fitted for the important practical purpose for which it was written. It did not seem that the additions and improvements which I planned would delay the Second Edition long. And, no doubt, a little time ought to have enabled me to effect at least the most important of them. But the fact is, that when, not very many months ago, I resolved to republish the volume, they were not merely still unfinished, but, though materials for them to a considerable amount had been laid up from time to time, they could scarcely be said to have been begun.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
