For _the regions here considered, in which the greater part Of our work must be done, travel is usually difficult and a bulky and heavy equip ment is, accordingly, a serious obstacle to safe transportation and rapid work. The conditions imposed make imperative also the omis sion of complicated and intricate mechanical devices, the adjustments Of which are generally difficult to make and maintain, as well as the avoidance Of a great number Of loose accessory parts, the loss Of any one of which may mean at times either the discontinuance or at least the serious interruption Of a campaign.
