It is surprising to find that a relatively small amount of work has been done upon this problem. Practically all investigations have been.non-experimental. Tests have been conducted at Sibley College to determine the probable loads produced in standard bolts when tightened for a steam-tight joint, but no attempt has been made to determine the relations existing between this load and the total tension on the one hand, and the useful or extennal load on the other. So far as we have been able to determine, no investigations, either the oretical or experimental, :have ever been undertaken to discover the effects of different kinds of packing on these loads.
