Excerpt from The Agricultural Revolution: An Appeal to the South's Bankers, Merchants, Manufacturers, Editors, and Public Men I am glad to-day to greet you as the representatives of these classes, and I am glad to bear witness to the magnificent work you are doing for the up-building of our Southland. The patriotism which has brought you here to plan for a more prosperous, more powerful, and more influential South than has ever yet been known - this patriotism is contagious and inspiring, and I honor all Southern business men who are working with such high aims. And yet here at the last I come to remind you that we cannot work out our dreams and our ambitions for a greater South without a better and more profitable agriculture as its basis. Every art and industry you represent is shackled and fettered just in the degree that we permit an unprofitable system of farming. The hope and deliverance for all of you is to be found only in a virtual revolution in the Souths agricultural practice. Thirty years ago. and more, that great-hearted and far-seeing Southern poet, Sidney Lanier, gave us the keynote of Southern development, and the burden of my address, in a paragraph that every Southern schoolboy ought to learn by heart: "A vital revolution in the farming economy of the South, if it is actually occurring, is necessarily carrying with it all future Southern politics, and Southern relations, and Southern art, and such an agricultural change is the one substantial fact upon which any really New South can be predicated." It is Lanier's old message that I would bring to you to-day - and yet I bring a new message too: that at last we have definitely set about the fulfillment of his dream. To tell you what this means to you and to the South, and to ask for your support in carrying it to success, is the object of my coming.
