It tells the story of our treatment of the native in the past, it aims at depicting the life he lives on his own ancestral hunting-grounds, and it gives some little account of the various missions and their influence upon him.Attempts are made, in the course of the chapters, to get at the inner working of his mind, to try and find out what the ideas and motives are which sway him, and what the principles of conduct which lie behind his outward acts. He is a man with a soul - a soul with a destiny - a soul for which Christ died. Is there anything in him which can be called "religion"? Are there any ideas already active in his mind which the Christian teacher can lay hold upon, and on which he can build the superstructure of the Christian faith?
