The Book of Esther is the seventeenth (17th) book of the thirty-nine (39) books of the Old Testament (OT). It is the twelfth (12th) and last of the twelve (12) Historical Books of the OT. It is one of only two books in the Christian Bible that does not mention God (the other being the Book of Songs of Solomon). It is also one of only two books of the Christian Bible named after women, with the Book of Ruth being the other. The main event described in the book is the creation of the annual Jewish festival of Purim, which commemorates the salvation of the Jewish nation from a plot by an Agagite named Haman to destroy them. The authorship of the book usually is attributed to Mordecai, one of the main characters of the story told in the book. It is usually dated to the 4th century BC (i.e., sometime between 499 BC and 400 BC).
