Excerpt from The Boston Medical and Surgical Journal, Vol. 20: February to August, 1839 Excrsron of the joints, said Mr. Liston, was an Operation which had been practised, he feared, rather indiscriminately, in cases where, per haps, complete rest might have saved the patient the su¿'ering and risk of an Operation, or again, where the disease was so far advanced that no hope of recovery from this operation was left. It was, however, a highly advisable and successful proceeding in many cases. There was, generally speaking, little dificulty in e¿'ecting the dissrticulation, the ligaments being almost destroyed, though, in the case of the elbow which was operated on the other day, there was a great deposit of new bone round the diseased part, with a condensation of the soft parts, which rendered the proceeding somewhat more dificult than usual. This deposit of new bone, as he had already remarked, would disappear by absorption after the ulcerated and unsound articulating ends were te moved, further, it was not at all necesse to interfere. Young subjects might, after excision, recover some uselliil motion of the elbow-joint, the muscles of the neighborhood formed new attachments, new liga~ ments were fanned, and bone deposited. This was not to be expected in the adult, in whom it was a safer and better plan to endeavorto obtain a sti¿' joint at the most favorable angle.
