Lucy Troyer, nursing a broken heart, is traveling by train to Middlefield, Ohio, to care for her cousin, Mattie, who was just diagnosed with breast cancer. Calvin Weaver is on his way home from a horse auction. He's used to being catered to, since his family owns a lot of land in Middlefield and he is handsome and outgoing--good marriage material. When their train breaks down, Calvin and Lucy, the only two Amish people onboard, band together. Calvin is taken aback by Lucy's independence and lack of interest in him, and once in Middlefield, she is busy caring for Mattie and he with helping run the town. But neither can fully forget the bond forged on the train.
