My aim has been to utilize such materials as I possessed, rather than to seek them elsewhere, in short, to write little which my own experience had not verified. The great difficulty has been to write a short rather than a long book on a subject so comprehensive. The classification of the varieties of dyspepsia was adopted after much consideration, and I venture to hope will be found practically useful. To prevent unnecessary repetition, typical, but not overdrawn cases have been substituted for more diffuse illustrations from my case-books. A brief account of the physiology of digestion appeared desirable, for the sake of laying before the reader the recent advances of science in this direction.
