The Chaplain, Vol. 30

Excerpt from The Chaplain, Vol. 30: A Journal for Chaplains Serving the Armed Forces, Veterans Administration and Civil Air Patrol, Winter, 1973-74 From time to time chaplains and their congregations feel the need to extend their worship giving to causes beyond their own local programs. Rightly so. In the civilian church community, virtually every dollar contributed is shared with "larger causes." Without support from local congregations, most church agencies simply could not function. But chapel congregations face a unique challenge in this regard. To what agency or charity should they give? There is certainly no dearth of worthy religious causes. Every church body has them in abundance. And privately-sponsored endeavors which depend on donations are legion. In a pluralistic Protestant chapel situation, however, the natural tendency is to avoid favoring one church over another and to direct special offerings to non-denominational or interdenominational causes. Some of the options are "naturals." The American Bible Society, Church World Service and the Christian Children's Fund, to name a few, are annually - and properly - supported by many chapel congregations. We presume to suggest another entry on the list of "worthy causes" to be considered for designated offerings - The General Commission on Chaplains and Armed Forces Personnel. Some facts: - The General Commission is ecumenical. A glance inside the back cover of this issue demonstrates the broad spectrum of American Protestantism represented among the member and contributing bodies. Through this journal, new ties have been established with the Commissions Roman Catholic, Orthodox and Jewish counterparts. - The General Commission is an instrument of churches, not of chaplains, clergymen or private agencies. Its sole purpose is to promote and support an effective ministry to the military community. - The General Commission is a service agency. Its publications, The Chaplain and The Link, are heavily subsidized to keep the costs affordable to chapel communities.
