It has long been the desire of the compiler to collect, first for his own pleasure and then for the pleasure of some of his friends, a series of passages in prose or verse describing the charm of the mountains, lakes, and history of the Swiss fatherland. Probably no anthology ever satisfied any one except its compiler, if, indeed, he is often content with his achievement, and an apology is usually required from any one who makes such a collection for sins of omission no less than for the inclusion of some less worthy work. In former years Switzerland was a paradise for the wealthy, and it was a place somewhat difficult to reach.
