In the same month Mr. Ludwig Mond obtained protection for a method of obtaining ammonia, and either hydrochloric acid or chlorine from ammonium chloride, by bringing the latter in contact with the rotoxide of nickel, or one or several of the oxides of co t, magnesium, zinc, copper, iron, manganese, aluminium, bismuth, or other heavy metals possessing similar chemical properties. It is said in the specification that the chlorine is retained, forming a chloride or oxychloride, while the ammonia asses on to beoabsorbed in suitable a paratus. Now comes t e critical portion of the process. A ter swee ing out the rest ammonia by means of an inert gas, super eated steam is passed through, whereby hydrochloric acid passes off and the metallic oxide ts reformed. If chlorine is required, after sweeping out the reatdual ammonia by means of the inert gas, air, preferably heated to 500° C., or oxygen, is slowly through, whereby chlorine is given off, and the metalhc oxide reformed.
