At the outbreak of the Civil War he was preparing for the gospel ministry, but felt constrained to enlist in the Confederate army, and served in Company G, Eighteenth Virginia Infantry, first as private and later as lieutenant, to the close of the war. He was twice wounded in battle, and was taken prisoner at Gettysburg. There he took part in the celebrated charge of Pickett's Division, and is said to have fired the last gun from his Division in that battle.
