Excerpt from The Chrysanthemum: Its History, Culture, Classification, and Nomenclature
To cultivators of the "Autumn" or "Winter Queen, " this little book on a now popular flower is offered with all a Chrysanthemum grower's sympathy. Our favourite flower is everywhere at home, even the cottage wall or porch may possess a little of the beauty it reflects from the conservatories of the rich, since of all flowers this one seems to be most amenable to the cultural care of rich and poor alike. It is the only hardy flower which can brave the November fogs of our metropolis, and "gild the shadows of a waning year" with its blossoms. No other late autumnal flowering plant is so useful, none other so grateful for the shelter of a glass roof, a window pane even, and its flowers seem the caresses of a dying year. Their beauty is all the more appreciated because tinged with a shade of sadness, and because they come to us as the last sheaf of a whole year's flower harvest. And when they leave us we are not without hope for the floral offerings of a happy new year.
