Excerpt from The Church and Her Members Wonder whether you have ever thought what a grand thing it is to be a Catholic You have been one for as long as you can remember, and for that very reason it is quite possible that you do not think of that fact as anything very remarkable. You have grown so used to calling yourself a Catholic, that you do not stop to think of all that that word means to you. You know, there is an old saying, Familiarity breeds con tempt, or, in other words, we can grow so used to a thing that we take it for granted, just like the air we breathe, and we never trouble to think about it, and try to see how wonderful it really is. It is for this reason that I am going to have a few talks with you, and to try to help you to see that in being a Catholic you enjoy a very great favour from God, that in your Faith you possess a prize worth more than all the world can give, which you ought to value and guard carefully all your life. What do we mean, then, when we speak about the Catholic Church? The Catechism tells us that it is the union of all the Faithful under one Head and that the Head of the Catholic Church is Jesus Christ. The Faithful, then, are those who believe in Jesus Christ, and look up to Him as their Master, who saved them by His death, and who teaches them what they must do on earth, so as to save their souls and so be worthy to live with Him in Heaven for all eternity. We all know that Jesus Christ is God the Son, made Man: and, with that knowledge, we all wish to be His friends, and to do what ever we can to please Him. It is Our Lord's wish, too, and that is one reason why He came to live down here on earth for a time, so that He could draw us all to Him, and get us to love and serve Him. Now it is not only one or two of us He wants, but all men. So, to make it easier for us, He founded His Church, that we might be all joined together to form one big body, or society. That is why we call the Church a union, or a joining together, of His faithful followers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
