Excerpt from The Church in Germany The deficiency will eventually be filled by Hauck, and my great regret is that I have had to undertake this task without his masterly guidance further than to the death of S. Boniface. The difficulty of writing the history of the Church in Germany during the mediaeval period is, as has been said, the fact that it is almost inextricably inter laced with the history of the empire. As the space accorded me did not allow of a history of Germany, I have done what appeared to me to be the right thing to do under the circumstances, that is, I have indicated the general condition of affairs ecclesiastical, and then given salient instances illustrative of the situation.
