Excerpt from The Church of St. Martin, Canterbury: An Illustrated Account of Its History and Fabric
St. Martin's Church appeals vividly both to the archaeologist and the historian. The date of its foundation is still uncertain, and there are many perplexing problems yet to be solved. We must leave their ultimate determination to time and to fresh explorations. Subjoined are the mature opinions of two eminent antiquaries. Whichever of them be right, the antiquity of the church and its associations for the English people are of supreme and unparalleled interest.
1. "We have at St. Martin's the concurrent testimony of history and of the building that it is of Roman date."
2. "I do not dispute that Augustine found a church (at St. Martin's), but I think nothing that is left can go farther back than the coming of Queen Bertha and her Christian family, who were using it when he came. Even so, it may claim to be the oldest of English churches - not merely by survival, but in fact."
