It first shows the place of its issue, either from a symbol, or the name of a city, or people, or in coins of a later period, from a portrait of a sovereign, accompanied by an inscription, the latter often relating to some great historical event, in which case the precise date of the coin is gener ally discoverable with ease: so that a coin, of which the purpose (for we know it was a piece of money), the country, and the date, cannot be disputed, besides conveying at once a general idea of the arts, resources, and manners of a people at the epoch of its circulation, must, when bearing evidence to special events, become an incontrovertible and striking testi mony.
