No one is better aware than the Editor himself of the inevitable imperfections in the early editions of a guidebook, and the vast extent of the Dominion of Canada has made the preparation of the present volume a peculiarly difficult task. He has not attempted to give more than a few suggestions and hints for the traveller's guidance in the less-known parts of the territory, where a journey still necessarily assumes something of the nature of an exploration. In such cases a book cannot take the place or perform the services of a living guide.
