The beginning Of the century was marked by a complete breakdown Of the whole economic life of the country, after which the industrial organization had to be built up anew from the foundations. The last quarter Of the sixteenth century witnessed a de/va's-t tating war in Ireland, in the course Of which property Of all kinds was deliberately and ruthlessly destroyed. It is not necessary for the purposes Of this book to go into the vexed question of the type of social and economic life which English policy set itself to destroy, that is a matter on which competent historians have expressed strongly difiering views, and it wouldbe presumption for the present author to express any opinion on the subject without having made an independent investiga tion.
