CDuring the nineteenth century Madison became a major tobacco marketing and processing center but virtually died as large new cities arose nearby in the Industrial Piedmont Greensboro, Winston - Salem, Martinsville. From the beginning of this century, however, a major concentration of textile industries has produced steady growth in the area, along with other specializations of brick and tile, lumber-furniture. And agriculture. Competitive vigor has produced growth despite the trends toward decline in the types of industry represented. An industry - by-industry projection indicated prospects for little growth, with declining basic industries and growing services and new types of firms. The big problem locally and in the area is in expansion of jobs for males, gains for females have been great, but overall'economic and population growth depend on higher-skill and higher - pay jobs for men. From 1950-60 in two local counties there were more jobs for women but 211 fewer jobs for men. It is not surprising that these two counties had a net outmigration of persons, mostly young adults of labor force age.
