Excerpt from The Emission of Electricity, From Hot Bodies
It will be seen from the following pages that the subject of the emission of electricity from hot bodies is one which has made rapid strides in recent years. It will also be clear that this field of inquiry still suggests for investigation many interesting questions which are either of theoretical or of practical importance. In dealing with the theory of the emission of electrons, one feels continually handicapped by the absence of a satisfactory and comprehensive theory of conduction for conductors of the metallic type. For this reason I have tried to make the treatment of this part of the subject as general as possible, and to reduce the part played by special theories to a minimum. Another difficulty lies in the interpretation of the facts bearing on the true nature of the contact potential difference between metals. In spite of a conflict lasting over a century, there still seems to be much room for difference of opinion here. This question is of fundamental importance in the interpretation of the theory of the emission of electricity from hot bodies.
It has seemed undesirable to include in the book an account of the numerous and important technical developments of the subject.
