The Spanish garrison Of 4000 men was surrounded and cut to pieces before relief could reach it. After the truce of Nice Charles had unquestionably intended to take the Offen sive in person, and to head a Crusade Of the three allied powers. He retired from Italy to Spain for the express purpose Of organising a campaign for 1539.
