In its present form the work differs slightly from that in which it was originally presented. The author desires to express his thanks to the Divinity Professors for having permitted him to make the following alterations: All Hebrew quotations have been translated, and isolated Hebrew words either transliterated or translated, all quotations from classical writings, as well as those from modern French and German works, have likewise been translated. By this means it was thought that the book might be made more acceptable to the general reader. In dealing with a subject which covers such a wide area as the "Messianic Idea, " it is impossible always to give reasons for statements which are made, a certain amount of knowledge on the part of the reader must be assumed.
