Excerpt from The Geography of Disease
The principal sources of information upon which the present work is based are enumerated in a list which will be found at the end of the book. For the colonies I have consulted the latest returns in the Official Health Reports of each colony, and I am indebted to Dr Manson and the Colonial Office for facilities to study those reports in the library of the Office. I must also acknowledge my indebtedness to the libraries of the Royal Statistical Society, the Royal College of Physicians, and the Royal College of Surgeons. Of the many books from which I have borrowed information the most valuable have been those dealing with the special subject Of Geographical Pathology, such as the writings of Hirsch, Davidson, Manson, Lombard, and others, but much additional in formation has been obtained from recent books of travel, and from many official and unofficial publications dealing with special countries, in which the facts as to disease prevalence have formed but a chapter, or even but a paragraph. Of the many. Medical journals from which much useful information has been extracted it will suffice to name, in addition to those mentioned above, the journal of Tropical Medicine, the various Indian journals for India, the sei-i-kwai for japan, the Medical Reports of a Chinese Customs Service for China, and many American and colonial journals for the United States and the colonies. It has been impossible in the text to insert references for every fact stated. Where references are not given it may be accepted that the statement is based On one Of the authorities named in the list at the end of the book.
